Mathira Member of Parliament (MP) Eric Wamumbi has shared his final encounter with gospel musician Betty Bayo, expressing shock over her sudden passing.

In a statement on Tuesday, November 11, Wamumbi said he had visited Bayo at AAR Hospital, Kiambu Road, on Thursday, where she appeared stable.

“I visited Betty Bayo on Thursday afternoon at AAR Hospital, Kiambu Road, and she was doing fairly okay. All her vital organs were stable, and she was breathing normally without a support system,” he recalled.

Wamumbi explained that Bayo’s condition worsened unexpectedly the following day, prompting her transfer to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for further care.

“The following day her health deteriorated, and we transferred her to Kenyatta National Hospital, where she was to start chemotherapy sessions,” he said.

Describing her death as a shock, the MP extended condolences to Bayo’s family.

“Her passing was a real shocker; she was okay! Shiru Wa GP and team, you did all you could for a friend; may God bless you. My heartfelt condolences to her daughter, Sky, and son Danny, her husband Hiram Gitau, and Betty’s entire family. Lala salama, Betty Bayo,” he added.

Betty Bayo dies

Bayo passed away on Monday, November 10, at 1:03 pm at KNH’s private wing. Her family said she had been battling acute leukaemia and excessive bleeding since the previous week.

She was initially admitted to AAR Hospital but was transferred to KNH on Friday, November 7, when her condition worsened. Despite efforts by doctors, she succumbed to her illness.

Her body was later moved from Kenyatta National Hospital to the Kenyatta University Referral Hospital Mortuary, in an ambulance from Jesus Compassion Ministries. Hundreds of fans gathered to view her body, and Pastor Victor Kanyari, Bayo’s ex-husband, was also present, dressed in all white.

Family and friends have begun planning memorial and burial services. Gospel artist Ben Githae announced that family meetings will be held at Bayo’s home in Eden Ville Estate, while the musician fraternity will convene at Bluesprings Hotel along Thika Road.

A memorial service is set for Sunday, November 16, with burial arrangements to be confirmed by the family. Bayo’s music, which inspired many across Kenya, leaves a lasting legacy in the gospel industry.
