Masengeli vows to kick out drug abuse and illicit brews in Murang’a

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Administration Police Service) Gilbert Masengeli has vowed to rid Murang’a County of illicit brews and drug abuse.

Speaking during the launching of a newly built Changai Police Station in Maragua, Masengeli stated that the police service will commit to ridding the county of drug abuse and related crimes.

“I have been briefed about this area on matters of drug abuse, alcohol, and gender-based violence. We are in agreement that as we open this police station, these crimes have to stop with immediate effect,” Masengeli said.

Untouchable criminals

“Nobody is untouchable; every criminal and all those engaging in adulterated and illicit brews, those engaging in drug abuse.”

Masengeli lamented that the scourge of drug abuse in Murang’a would wipe out an entire generation if urgent actions are not taken.

“A generation will be lost if we do not take out the illicit alcohol and drug abuse in Murang’a. We will have to partner with the locals, chiefs, and the leadership to ensure that we stamp out the drug abuse and gender-based violence and all manner of criminal activities that are happening within the county,” he stated.

Criminal activities

Maragua MP Mary Wamaua said that the area had been experiencing several criminal activities, and that the presence of a police station would curb the vices.

“This area has experienced a lot of criminal activities, especially the challenge of illicit brews and bhang, whose users would come and smoke around this area. There were also several cases of sexual harassment and rape in this area,” Wamaua noted.

On her part, Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina appealed to the government to urgently provide police officers to the station.

She equally urged the state to procure enough vehicles for the police officers and to ensure that their welfare is properly taken care of.

“We need an urgent recruitment of police because we know that we have insufficient police officers in this country. We also have a problem within our police, where there are insufficient vehicles in police stations.  We are requesting an urgent procurement of police vehicles and to take care of the police officers,” Maina said.
