Maraga vows to restore rule of law if elected president
By Mabonga Makhanu, June 25, 2025Former Chief Justice and 2027 presidential hopeful David Maraga has come out to explain why adherence to the rule of law will be the cornerstone of his leadership should he be elected.
Speaking during an interview on a popular podcast on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, Maraga emphasised that his administration would be anchored on strict adherence to the rule of law.
He explained that when the person holding the office of the president respects the law, every officer under them follows suit, and no one dares to act outside the law.
“One of the strongest pillars of my presidential bid is the demand that everyone obey the law. When the president observes the rule of law, it sends a very strong message to those under him. Nobody can disregard the law if the president himself is obeying it, and that is extremely important,” Maraga said
He stated that his decision to prioritise the rule of law stems from the rampant impunity and disregard for legal frameworks currently witnessed in the country.
Current situation
According to him, the nation finds itself in a crisis because the head of state is setting the wrong precedent, leading other officials to follow suit.
“Impunity is what has brought this country to where it is today. People engage in criminal acts and the plunder of public resources because they know nothing will happen to them; they are protected by those in high positions within the government. That is the root of our current situation,” he added.
Maraga further noted that criminal activities such as corruption and the plundering of public resources continue to thrive because perpetrators know they will face no consequences, often shielded by individuals in high office.
He concluded by insisting that if elected president, he will work to reset the country and restore respect for constitutionalism and legal order.
“If elected, I will reset the country back to constitutionalism and the rule of law so that even if you commit a traffic offence, you are fined accordingly — based on the seriousness of the violation,” he concluded.
Presidential quest
Driven by a vision of integrity and reform, Maraga launched his campaign in 2025, leveraging his global recognition for annulling the 2017 presidential election.
He champions the rule of law and vows to tackle corruption, end police brutality, and foster equitable governance.

His message resonates particularly with sections of Gen Z voters and reformists who view his judicial tenure as a symbol of principled leadership.
However, challenges remain. Critics like Kasmuel McOure point to past judicial inconsistencies, such as Maraga’s controversial stance on the two-thirds gender rule, as potential weak points.
Facing strong competition from figures like Fred Matiang’i, who are from the same region and community, and contending with limited campaign funding, Maraga’s path to victory hinges on him convincing Kenyans to consider his past track record.
