Maraga demands accountability over e-Citizen scandal, calls for resignations
By Faith Lagat, August 7, 2025Former Chief Justice David Maraga has issued a scathing critique of the Kenyan government, demanding immediate accountability and resignations following revelations from the Auditor General’s audit report on the eCitizen platform.
In a strongly worded statement posted on X dated August 7, 2025, Maraga accused the current regime of systemic corruption and urged Kenyans to unite in a movement to “reset, restore, and rebuild Kenya.”
Impunity
Maraga claimed the report exposed a regime that “will not just steal; it does so with arrogance and impunity.” He criticised what he described as the endless greed of those entrusted with public office, saying their actions have left the nation exhausted.
According to the former CJ, the country is suffering under leaders who confuse power with entitlement and view public resources as personal property. He painted a grim picture of governance where public money is treated as disposable income, with no regard for the daily struggles of citizens.

Human cost of corruption
Maraga’s message highlighted the real-world consequences of financial mismanagement, stressing that the issue extends far beyond the Auditor General’s balance sheets. He said the scandal was about empty stomachs, children dropping out of school, and families forced to choose between healthcare, education, or food.
“The pain across our nation is real. This is about stolen dreams and a generation locked out of economic opportunity,” he stated, warning that this is how states fail—through the slow erosion of public trust and systematic breakdown of functional governance.
Call for resignations
In a bold escalation, Maraga demanded that the government publish all local and foreign bank accounts allegedly used to syphon public funds and disclose the account holders. He called for the immediate resignation of all public officials linked to the reported irregularities.
He added that citizens will not be desensitised by repeated cases of corruption and vowed continued pressure on those in power. “Kenyans will not relent in their pursuit of accountability and good governance,” he said.
Maraga concluded with a call for unity and reform, saying the time had come to confront impunity and rebuild the nation.
