Maraga dares to charge Ruto, Kindiki over extrajudicial orders if elected president
By Faith Lagat, September 4, 2025Former Chief Justice David Maraga has issued a fiery pledge that could reshape the 2027 political contest, declaring he will pursue accountability for those behind last year’s deadly protests if elected president.
In a post on X on Thursday, September 4, 2025, at 12:48 PM, Maraga said, “Under my leadership, there will be justice and accountability for all the youth killed, injured, and abducted during the 2024 and 2025 protests.
“Justice will be given to those people who lost their loved ones. It doesn’t matter how long it takes. Kindiki himself will be held liable for those kinds of orders. Even the president.
“When he’s out of the office, he is going to be answerable to the Kenyans about the order to shoot. I mean, he says ‘shoot on the foot’. Have you ever heard any head of state say that? No. So ridiculous.”

Constitution defenders
Maraga’s hard-hitting statement follows his remarks on Katiba Day, August 27, 2025, where he saluted Kenyans who fought for the 2010 Constitution. He described it as one of the world’s most transformative legal charters and honoured those who died during the struggle.
“I pay tribute to those who died in the process of agitating for the Constitution. You are forever our Mashujaa. I celebrate all those Kenyans who have worked day and night since August 2010 to get our constitution fully implemented,” he said.
Maraga also lauded Gen Z activists for defending constitutionalism against what he termed a political elite intent on undermining it, cementing his growing appeal among young voters.
Rejecting corrupt politics
The former CJ has been sharply critical of President Ruto’s administration, accusing it of pursuing corrupt agendas while disregarding human life during the suppression of protests.
His promise to hold Kindiki and President Ruto accountable mirrors sentiments expressed by opposition leaders Raila Odinga and Rigathi Gachagua, both of whom condemned the alleged “shoot-to-kill” orders.
Further strengthening his grassroots image, Maraga revealed in an August 24, 2025, TV interview that he had rejected corrupt campaign financing.
“When Kenyans themselves fund my campaign, I am obliged to them. I will know this is manna that has come from Wanjiku,” he said, dismissing government empowerment funds as recycled proceeds of corruption.
