Manyatta MP Mukunji vows support for Duncan Mbui after ditching DCP in Mbeere North race
By Mabonga Makhanu, September 7, 2025Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji has vowed to support Mbeere North parliamentary aspirant Duncan Mbui in the upcoming by-elections, despite Mbui ditching the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) to run as an independent candidate.
While addressing the nation on the heels of Dancun Mbui’s departure from DCP on Saturday, September 7, 2025, Mukunji, who is a member of DCP and an ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, affirmed that he will fully back Mbui whether he contests on the DCP ticket or as an independent.
The MP said he believes Mbui is best suited for the job, adding that the aspirant has shown commitment by actively seeking the seat instead of waiting for endorsements.
Mukunji, who has been camping in Mbeere North campaigning for Mbui, emphasised that he has established himself as a leader who defends the interests of the local mwananchi, which is why he has chosen to stand with Duncan Mbui regardless of his party’s stance.
He further urged his party to avoid power brokering within the united opposition and instead allow candidates to go through fair nominations.
“Candidate wangu ni Mbui, na nitasimama na yeye hadi amalize, afike hadi mwisho regardless of anything. Hawa wengine wanangoja wakamwatwe wasaidike, lakini huyu amekuwa akijituma mwenyewe; mimi nimetengeneza siasa yangu kwa kusimama na haki ya mwanachi,” Mukunji stated.
Mbui ditches DCP
This comes after Duncan Mbui, who has been serving as the Evurori MCA in Mbeere North, quit the DCP party to vie on an independent ticket.
He cited the party’s decision to leave the parliamentary slot to a candidate from DP as the reason for his move.
He did not spare his now-former party. While labelling it a members’ club within the United Opposition, he stated that his party has been influenced by constituent parties within the United Opposition not to field a candidate in the upcoming Mbeere North by-election and leave it to the Justin Muturi-led DP party, a decision which, according to him, is meant to kill his political ambition.

For this reason, the ward representative has decided to get to the polls alone on an independent ticket.
“I have been watching with a keen eye the goings-on at the DCP party and have come to the conclusion that the party is a members’ club within the so-called ‘United Opposition’,” he said.
