Man in hospital after ordeal with rustlers
By KNA, September 16, 2022A 65-year-old man is nursing gunshot wounds at Maralal Referral Hospital after cattle rustlers raided his house in Rangau, Maralal town.
Speaking yesterday, Hassan Lengoriani said the bandits raided his home at 3am on Thursday morning and stole seven cows after shooting him in the right thigh.
“I heard people outside my house trying to drive the cows away. When I attacked them using a spear, one of them shot me,” he said.
Lengoriani said he was taken to hospital by his neighbours. Samburu Central Deputy County Commissioner Titus Omanyi said Lengoriani is in stable condition.
He blamed young Morans for a recent spate of insecurity in Maralal, noting that the attackers recently graduated from traditional mass initiation rites.
“Moranism is a stage in life and we are trying to reach them through the elders and their age set leaders whom they recognise, to ensure they maintain peace,” he said.
At the same time, Omanyi assured Maralal residents of their security, saying that day and night patrols have been intensified and a number of armed NPRs have been redeployed so response to a distress is not a challenge.
