Man charged with holding State fertiliser
A man has been charged with having 252 bags of subsidised government fertilizer worth Sh630,000.
Robert Bett who appeared before Milimani Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina was arrested at Ololulunga in Narok while attempting to sell the fertiliser.
He was released on Sh1 million bond with one contact person or cash bail of Sh500,000 pending a hearing and determination of the case.
According to the prosecution, an operation conducted by officers drawn from DCI’s Serious Crimes Unit led to Grace Covenant Church where the fertilizer was confiscated.
So far, about 10 suspects have been arrested and charged for fraudulently obtaining the government fertilisers, including two officials from the Ministry of Agriculture.
In the first case, Kipkorir Tanui and Edwin Oseko, both employees in the public service, are jointly accused of conspiracy to defraud the government of 19,913 bags each containing 50kg subsidy fertilizer valued at Sh49,789,500.
The two are also charged with abuse of office; Kiprotich Tonui, the Assistant Director of Information Communication Technology, is alleged to have recommended the registration of Wilson Mempe as a farmer owning 1,800 acres of land for crop farming at Meleo in Narok.
This led to Litunya redeeming a total of 7,200 bags of subsidised fertilizer valued at Sh18 million.
The two did not, however answer to charges on Friday as Edwin was not before court.
In another file, Bimack Kipchirchir, Samuel Kipkosgei Kugo and Harry Kiprop are accused of conspiring to defraud the government of 6,150 bags valued at Sh15,375,000.
