Malaria still high despite prevention bids
Malaria prevalence in Siaya is still high at 29 per cent despite numerous interventions being put in place to control the situation. 2
According to County’s Malaria Coordinator Eunice Oreri, incidences have been unstable in the past five years, an indication that Siaya is still a malaria endemic county.
Oreri regretted that the prevalence of Malaria in Siaya is higher than the six per cent national rate.
Malaria still engulfs Siaya despite measures put in place by the government and private stakeholders but we wont tire in fighting it,” Oreri said.
Acting Director of Medical Services Peter Omoth said even though the prevalence rate is still high, the county has made a tremendous achievement in terms of reduction of the prevalence rate which was at 49 per cent some years back and now 29.
“In order to see a further reduction of the prevalence rate of the deadly disease, a lot more efforts need to put in place by ensuring proper adherence to the laid down intervention strategies,” Omoth said.
They were speaking in Gem Yala sub-county yesterday.
