The roll out of Grade Four Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in has taken off well without hitches, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha said yesterday.

Magoha said more than 99 per cent of schools across the country had received the requisite books but a few are yet to receive them, which are expected to arrive today.

Speaking when he made impromptu visits to Mutomo, Gatundu and Kimunyu Primary Schools in Gatundu South, Kiambu county, Magoha said heavy rains occasioned delay in distribution of books in areas such as Turkana.

For incoming Grade One pupils, Magoha said more books could be produced if need be.

Grade Four pupils will be expected to cover Maths, English, Science, Kiswahili, Home Science and Physical Health.

Magoha said enough teachers have been trained in readiness for the roll-out.  He warned teachers against turning children away due to unpaid school fees, lunch money or  uniform issues.

To ensure the right capitation is disbursed to learners, the CS urged teachers to make proper use of National Education Management Information System (Nemis) .

“Even if teachers don’t have birth certificates, index numbers should be enough and Nemis has been upgraded to accommodate that,” he said.

The CS said  the government has a huge task ahead to renovate many dilapidated schools across the country and purchase learning infrastructure such as chairs. – Reporting by Mathew Ndung’u, Winstone Chiseremi, Harrison Kivisu and David Macharia
