Machakos rules out selective promotion of health workers

The County Government of Machakos has ruled out selective promotion of workers in the department of health while leaving out other departments.

In a press briefing issued yesterday by County Secretary Dr Muya Ndambuki and the County Public Service Board Chairman Albanus Mutisya, the officials said the department of health had enjoyed promotion of staff for the last three years while the rest of the departments comprising of over 6000 workers remained stagnant.

Mutisya said it would be unfair to promote one cadre of workers while leaving out the rest as this could result to more industrial action among county government workers.

“In 2023 only 6% of staff were promoted. To avert further strikes the County management is reviewing the promotions of 94 % of employees who were not promoted. Eligible staff are in the process of submitting their applications for promotions,”said the County Government in a statement.

Health workers had issued a strike notice agitating for promotions. Dr Ndambuki however pointed out that promotions will be based on merit after skills audit and that those eligible for promotions were in the process of applying for the same.
