Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka, Leader of Majority Samuel Poghisio and former Kiambu Governor  William Kabogo on Sunday urged the church to pray for the country and openly condemn bad leadership.

They said the country needs prayers particularly as next year’s General Election draws close.

“The church must provide leadership. Christians should pray for the country and we should live like brothers and sisters,” said Lusaka.

Speaking in Limuru town during a home-coming ceremony of the newly installed AIPCK Bishop Paul Njenga Kinyenje, the Speaker differed with Kabogo on whether God has a role in the election of leaders.

Kabogo, who was the chief guest during the event, had said leaders were not anointed by God as some claim.

“It is said that leaders are chosen by God. However, I tend to differ because I believe that God only gives people knowledge to elect right leaders,” Kabogo said.

Lusaka, however, insisted that leaders come from God. “I differ with my friend Kabogo because I know that leadership comes from God.

I have seen the hand of God in my life having risen from an administrator to Speaker of the Senate,” he said.

Covid danger

He urged Kenyans to shun negative ethnicity, saying nobody chose to be born in a particular community or region.

“I am from Western Kenya but when I am seated among you, nobody can notice because we look the same in colour and we breathe the same air,” he said.

Poghisio called upon leaders from across the political divide to desist from endangering the lives of Kenyans by holding political rallies amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Urging the clergy to pray for the country, Poghisio said Kenya is headed in the wrong direction unless leaders tone down their political rhetoric. “The country is greater than all of us.

Let us not engage in things that endanger the lives of innocent citizens. Recently we went to Kisumu and now Covid-19 is killing tens of people,” said Poghisio.

Mt Kenya split

“Over the weekend you saw others holding mega rallies in West Pokot and one can only imagine what can happen if the killer disease breaks out there keeping in mind we have limited health facilities,” he added.

Kabogo said the Mt Kenya region will be in a tricky position in 2022 if it doesn’t remain united.

He decried the apparent division between Mt Kenya East and West, saying that unless leaders swallow their pride, the region will be short changed in next year’s elections.

“We should stop politics of division. We should unite as a region before engaging any other factions from outside Mt Kenya because unity is strength,” he said.
