Lobbyists fault BBI push for plebiscite

An association of civil societies and social movements dubbed Uwazi Consortium has termed the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) a mockery, a waste of time, resources and a rubber-stamping exercise.
The harsh criticism from the consortium of civil societies led by lawyer Yash Pal Ghai comes few days after the country’s top judges called the BBI a bluff.
The group made the remarks when releasing a report titled “Captured at Conception” The unlikely promise of BBI and the Quest for Reforming Kenya.
“The study did not find anything that inspires confidence in the BBI. The Handshake between President Uhuru and former Premier Raila Odinga, which led to the formation of the BBI, is shrouded in mystery,” part of the report read.
It also highlighted that President Kenyatta and Odinga met and agreed to find common grounds in order to restore peace and stability without any input from their political support bases.

Ghai specifically opposed the clamour to have the constitutional change to accommodate the expansion of the executive.
