Road safety lobby groups have opposed Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen’s directive to have National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) back on the roads.

Road Safety Association of Kenya Chairman David Kiarie and his counterpart of Speed Governors and Road Safety Association Edward Gitonga said the move would achieve nothing towards ending the road carnage.

Speaking during a meeting in Juja, Kiambu to review the resurgence of accident deaths following a series of fatal crashes, the safety officials said the solution to the carnage lies in enforcement of speed limiting rules for all PSVs including school buses and trucks.

“Murkomen’s recent order to have NTSA back on the roads would only lead to more corruption and won’t help to curb accident fatalities,” said Kiarie.

Kiarie, who accused Murkomen of sleeping on the job and resorting to knee-jerk reactions, told the CS to “do the honourable thing and resign” or be relieved of his duties by the President.

“We have said repeatedly that the buck stops with the CS who has been sleeping on his job while Kenyans continue to die on the roads like rats. He should do the honourable thing and resign or be sacked by the President,” said Kiarie.

He also criticised NTSA role on the roads, saying the organisation lacks the requisite manpower to carry out traffic regulations which is the work of the police.

Gitonga on his part maintained that majority of school buses and trucks were not undergoing inspection to establish if they meet the safety standards.

Group also condoled with families of the 11 Kenyatta University students who perished in an accident at Maungu area along the Nairobi-Mombasa road last Monday.
