Kisumu, Sunday

After a three-week rest, Gor Mahia bounced back to the summit of the Kenyan Premier League standings after a 3-0 thrashing of Kisumu All Stars at the Moi Stadium on Sunday evening.

Gor’s matches were postponed due to their players being involved in the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup, a rest that allowed Tusker to crawl to the summit.

However, the defending champions announced themselves back with a delightful performance against ‘Otenga’ in Kisumu.

Kenneth Muguna and Lawrence Juma slotted straight into the starting team despite their full involvement with the Harambee Stars in Uganda, while defender Joash Onyango started on the bench.

After a goalless first half, Gor strode into the lead just two minutes after restart through Nicholas Kipkurui. On the hour mark, K’Ogalo were soaring as skipper Muguna added the second to further deflate the home side.

They sealed the three points four minutes later through Bernard Ondiek who is continuing in his role as a makeshift right-back.

The victory takes Gor to 28 points, same as second-placed Tusker who have an inferior goal difference. Gor still have three games at hand.

Meanwhile, AFC Leopards produced a similar performance to see off Mathare United by the same margin in Mumias.

Vincent Oburu scored twice in the 43rd and 91st minutes in between John Mark Makwatta’s goal as Ingwe jumped to seventh on the log with their first win in four games. They are on 22 points, six behind the leaders. In Nakuru, Ulinzi Stars moved to fifth position and within three points of the summit after beating Zoo Kericho 4-0.

Oscar Wamalwa, fresh from picking the golden boot at the Senior Challenge Cup in Kampala, showed his goals were no fluke as he scored twice in the massive victory.

He scored in the 37th and 53rd minutes, adding on to earlier goals by Enosh Ochieng in the fourth minute and John Njuguna in the 16th minute.

Ochieng opened the scoring early, rising high to head home a Harun Mwale cross. Njuguna then made it 2-0 with a fine low finish after picking up a pass from John Kago.

The soldiers went to the break with a healthy three-goal margin, Wamalwa nodding home Brian Birgen’s cross.

The lanky forward, a new favourite of Stars head coach Francis Kimanzi, then made it 4-0 after six minutes of the second half when he tapped home a cross from Njuguna.           -CAPITAL
