Legislator calls for TSC probe over cash-for-admission claim

Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera has urged the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to investigate rampant cases of admission letters being traded by some principals of national schools in the country.

Nabwera claims the much-sought admission letters are being sold for between Sh100,000 and Sh150,000 to parents to secure Form One admission for their children in national schools.

The MP has asked TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia to move with speed and rein in the high school principals behind the alleged scam to restore sanity in the education sector.

Speaking to the media in Eldoret town yesterday, Nabwera who is also a National Assembly Education Committee member said that he was ready and willing to help the teachers’ employer to unearth the alleged scam.

He added that he has evidence of two national schools in Western and North Rift region where parents have been asked to part with Sh100,000 to facilitate admission for their children in the respective schools.

“I am willing and ready to produce evidence linking the principals involved in the trading of admission letters if called upon by the teacher’s employer to help tame the vice from getting out hand,” stated Nabwera.

The MP has asked the TSC not to take the instances where high school principals are demanding cash in exchange for admission letters for granted noting that the matter should be addressed with the seriousness it deserves.

“The TSC should expedite probe in national schools where the alleged bribery cases are very rampant to save parents students from more sufferings in the wake of hard economic times facing the country,” added Nabwera.

He said that he has received several complaints from scores of parents whose children are victims of the dishonest high school principals, adding that unless the government addresses the mess, the quality of education would be compromised.

Nabwera further revealed that some national and extra-county schools were charging with impunity parents for fees than what the Ministry of Education has prescribed.
