‘We don’t consider public views collected’- Senator Ledama Ole Kina
Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina has revealed that politicians fail to take into account the considerations of Kenyans after holding public participation.
During an interview on Wednesday, June 13, 2024, Ledama explained that the IMF and other international bodies like the World Bank maintain control of narratives through policies.
“I can tell you as a politician and a parliamentarian, whenever we have public participation, we collect the views of the public but we do not consider them. That’s a fact. I do not apply butter to something which is not bread. I can assure you, all the views of Kenyans, in regard to the painful reality none of them will be considered. The challenge is we are not controlling ourselves, the reality is, that the IMF and World Bank are dictating which policies we should put.
Ledama’s statement comes hours before the budget reading to be tabled in parliament. He asked Kenyans not to be misled by politicians and to always be keen when choosing their preferred leader.
“I want to call upon the citizens of Kenya not to allow politicians to mislead them. The important thing is to take into account how they are voting, behaving in parliament and turning into voting machines instead of protecting their interests,” Ledama added.
Finance Bill 2024
Similarly, Kenyans had made several calls for a review of the government revenue and expenditure plans for the 2024/2025 fiscal year ahead of the budget reading on June 13.
As part of the discussion, Ledama claimed that the proposed budget goes against the expectations of many low-income Kenyans, and suggested that the only thing they may have the ability to afford is bread.
“Can we be specific to a Kenyan who is making Ksh50,000, the suggestion is that if the Finance Bill passes and is ascended into law, the government alone will take Ksh21,000 leaving the Kenyan with Ksh29,000. That means the only thing they will be able to eat is ‘ugali’ 24/7,” Ledama noted.
