Ledama accuses National Assembly of undermining Constitution in attacks on Senate

Narok Senator Ledama Olekina has accused the National Assembly of undermining the Constitution through its persistent attacks on the Senate, warning that such actions erode the principles of devolution and institutional independence.

In a statement posted on his X account on Friday, August 16, 2025, Ledama termed the ongoing disputes between the two Houses a worrying sign of disregard for the letter and spirit of the Constitution.

“The continued attacks on the Senate by the National Assembly reflect a worrying disregard for the letter and spirit of our Constitution,” Ledama stated.

Reckless claims

The Narok senator criticised Members of the National Assembly for what he termed reckless claims of mutilation without seeking the people’s mandate through a referendum.

“When Members claim ‘mutilation’ without a referendum, one wonders whether they have truly engaged with the law they swore to uphold,” Ledama remarked.

The senator also directed his criticism at the Executive, accusing it of applying double standards in its relationship with Senators.

He argued that the government cannot expect the Senate’s support on key legislative and policy matters while simultaneously casting aspersions on its credibility.

“As for the Executive, moral authority cannot be invoked selectively—one cannot rely on Senators to advance an agenda and in the same breath cast doubt on their integrity,” he stated.

Focus on nation-building

This statement comes days after Ledama called on Kenyans and media outlets to shift their focus from political bickering to economic transformation, arguing that constant political commentary is hindering the nation’s progress.

Olekina in a statement issued on his social media accounts on July 25, 2025, suggested delaying political evaluations of President William Ruto’s administration until the 2027 elections. He proposed that the next 16 months be dedicated to implementing development projects.

“This is the time to unite and focus on economic development. We can evaluate the president’s performance in 2027. Let’s not allow divisive politics to dominate headlines,” he said.
