Ledama, 2 Azimio senators kicked out of Senate for causing commotion
Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina, Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo and Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua have been kicked out of the senate for 3 days by Senate Deputy Speaker Kathuri Murungi.
The trio was kicked out of the Senate chambers after causing commotion when the Deputy Speaker was reading a ruling on the minority side’s clamour to dewhip Isiolo Senator Fatuma Dulloh.
The deputy speaker was forced to suspend the house sitting for 15 minutes following the commotion and refusal of the lawmakers to exit the chambers.
“This house must be led by standing orders. When a speaker is making his communication and you are not giving the speaker to communicate. I want to order the following senators out of the chamber for the next three days. Senator Enoch Wambua, the minority leader Madzayo and Senator Ledama. I order you out of the chambers,” the deputy speaker said amid jeers from Azimio senators.
Azimio senators were disgruntled by the speaker’s communication of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) decision to bar it from making changes in its leadership.
Led by the suspended trio, the opposition lawmakers had encroached on the speaker’s chair while singing the national anthem in protest.
The lawmakers are pushing for the ouster of Isiolo senator Fatuma Dullo, who is part of Jubilee legislators who have avowed support to the Kenya Kwanza administration.
In the changes announced by Azimio leader Raila Odinga last week, Dullo was ousted and her place taken over by Narok Senator Ledama ole Kina.
Dullo was however saved by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) after it barred Azimio from effecting changes in its House leadership.
In a heated debate yesterday, the senators accused deputy speaker Kathuri Murungi of defying the Senate’s standing orders.
“Respect of the rule of law and judicial authority are fundamental tenets of our democratic system of governance and, accordingly, I defer the communication pending the outcome of the proceedings before the tribunal,” Murungi said during the Tuesday sitting.
Minority Leader Stewart Madzayo however accused the deputy speaker of denying the minority wing an opportunity to make changes in its leadership.
“What we want as a minority is what we gave you last week and it has taken so long, you are now denying the minority opportunity to have their leaders,” he said.
