Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru: I have been arrested, I am being accused of obstruction
By Martin Oduor, July 8, 2026Prominent constitutional lawyer Ndegwa Njiru has announced his arrest in Nairobi late Wednesday evening, July 8, 2026, following a highway traffic incident that quickly escalated into a legal standoff.
Njiru, a high-profile legal figure widely known for his representation of embattled political figures in high-stakes impeachment trials and constitutional petitions, stated that he was taken into custody by officers from the Kasarani Police Station.
Writing directly to his followers on his official digital platforms at 10:27 pm, the Opposition-leaning lawyer disclosed that he was being held at the station over claims of traffic obstruction – a charge he claims stemmed entirely from a mechanical failure.
“I have been Arrested by the Kasarani police I am at Kasarani station,” Njiru wrote in a frantic late-night post.
“I am being accused of obstruction after my vehicle broke down on the Thika High[way].”

At the time of his publication, the lawyer noted that authorities had “yet to book” him formally into the station’s occurrence book, indicating a fluid situation as legal colleagues and human rights advocates began rallying to the precinct.
The Thika Superhighway, an eight-lane highway connecting Nairobi to central Kenya, is subject to strict traffic management, and vehicle breakdowns frequently cause severe gridlock.
However, the swift arrest of a high-calibre officer of the court over a standard mechanical malfunction immediately raised eyebrows within Kenya’s legal fraternity – particularly since Njiru is a staunch supporter of DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua.
Police have not yet issued an official statement regarding the precise circumstances that led their officers to arrest Njiru.
