Last moments of slain Nyamira teacher
The Nyamira teacher whose mutilated body was found in a house on Sunday was lured to his death after allegedly a long-drawn-out negotiation to refund some money.
Ezekiel Nkeere was to be an MC at wedding but was called by Agnetta Agwata, one of the key suspects, who requested him to pass by her house for a discussion.
Neighbours who spoke to People Daily said Ezekiel Nkeere desperately pleaded with his killers to spare his life saying: “Please help me, kindly forgive me, we are one people, we can talk over this.”
His screams were, however, short-lived, as they were immediately followed by very loud music from the nurse’s house.
Detectives are pursuing two angles — obtaining money by false pretences and a love triangle — following preliminary investigations.
The nurse is said to have given the deceased some money for purchase of land where they were to construct a house. The man, however, did not purchase the land.
Detectives are also investigating reports that, contrary to the earlier agreement, the deceased used the money to buy a piece of land and built himself a house.
Reports indicate that after the nurse realized that she had been duped by the boyfriend, she made several efforts, including through friends, to recover the money.
“She had now to engage other people in a bid to recover the money from the deceased after several attempts failed,” a close friend of the nurse who sought anonymity said.
Sources said the deceased had taken a bank loan of Sh300,000 as so as to reimburse her, but to her disappointment the teacher used the money to pay college fees for his children.
The money given to the deceased was paid to the nurse after her interdiction was lifted. She had earlier been interdicted after she allegedly slapped a medical superintendent.
Suspects identified
Nyamira South police boss Moses Kirong said the investigations were at an advanced stage since two of the key suspects had been identified.
They are, however, yet to be arrested.
“The deceased, Ezekiel Nkeere Gettangwa, was last seen being dropped at Egesieri village in Nyabite market on Friday morning by a boda boda rider,” the police boss said. According to witnesses, the deceased, who was the head teacher at Getengereri Primary School, was seen entering the nurse’s compound before desperate cries for help were heard.
Suddenly, there was very loud music coming from the house and the nurse stepped out of the house. She told the neighbours not to worry about the screams saying she was watching a movie and playing music at the same time.
Eyewitnesses said the body bore marks of torture, with the eyes gouged out.
“The body was naked and badly mutilated with deep cuts on the head, thighs, and arms. It seems the assailants used very sharp objects,” said Dennis Orare.
The rider told the detectives that he picked up the deceased at around 9am from Geteri, who requested to be dropped at Egesieri, about three kilometres away.
John Ondari, a neighbour, said Ms Agwata house was usually frequented by different men but at the time of the attack, it was not known who were in the house.
Nyamira South Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Paul Makonge yesterday told reporters in his office that some parts of the body had been chopped off. He added that there were some polythene papers near the body that they suspect were to be used in transporting and finally dumping the body.
“The house belongs to the nurse who has gone underground and switched off her phones after realizing that we are tracking her. I am asking her to surrender to any police post, police station, or national government officer for her own safety,” the DCI boss said.
The nurse switched off her phone in Kisii town near Paramount Building before it finally went off, according to detectives.
“We have also information that her accomplice, Zablon Kagera, was also deeply involved in this act, and we are therefore asking him to surrender for his own good,” he added.
The deceased’s wife, Gladys Bonareri Achoki, told the police that his phone went off a few hours after he left home. She however assumed that the phone had run out of power and hoped to see him back home in the evening. He didn’t return.
