Nyahururu-based Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) will this Sunday play host to a major event as the Laikipia Presbytery is set to be split in two.

Presbytery head Rev Michael Kimani announced that the ceremony to officially announce the creation of Nyahururu and Rumuruti Presbyteries, will be presided over by the church’s top national decision-making organ – The General Assembly led by the National Moderator Thegu Mutahi.

The Presbytery, an equivalent of a diocese, is one of 50-plus presbyteries of the PCEA Church in the country, will cease to be called Laikipia when it is split.

“The Laikipia Presbytery which was created many years ago has grown making it necessary for the sub division.“It takes a long time to split a Presbytery and this (splitting of the Laikipia) will be a milestone for us worshipers,” Rev Kimani said.

The creation of the extra Presbytery will increase the number of Presbyteries in the country to about 60, with more parishes being formed as Rumuruti Presbytery will create its own sub units and also cover the Maralal outreach area that has been under Laikipia. Kimani said all church elders in Laikipia Presbytery and all clergy including the retired ones must attend the historic ceremony.

“Unless one is suffering from proven sickness all must attend. Failure to attend will lead to one losing the eldership status,” he warned.

Currently, the Presbytery covers Kabazi and Subukia areas of Nakuru county, Nyahururu town and its environs as well as the parishes of Ol Moran, Muhotetu, Ng’arua and Kirima among others.
