Kuppet pushes for 50-100 pc pay rise

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) is demanding a salary increment of between 50 to 100 per cent for their members across the country in their new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) to cope with the high cost of living.

According to KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori (pictured), from 2017 to 2024, there has been a huge price increment, especially in oil products and other basic products that are used by ordinary citizens.

“We are also proposing the harmonization of house allowance to match that of Nairobi City and increase it by 20 per cent. We are also calling for the establishment of extraneous kitties because teachers stand for long hours in covering their curriculum,” said added Misori who was accompanied by other top union officials.

Speaking during the KUPPET meeting at AIC Mokombet Church yesterday in Uasin Gishu County, the union officials who included Moses Nturima, deputy secretary and Julius Korir, the national vice chairman defended the union’s move to put on hold the recent industrial action which paralysed learning in public schools for more than one month countrywide.

The union is also demanding a risk allowance for teachers working in hardship areas and those working in laboratories and workshops to cater for eventualities.
