KUCCPS details revised criteria for 2026 university and college placements
The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), the government agency responsible for placing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates into universities and colleges, has announced revised placement criteria for the 2026 admission cycle.
The new framework introduces changes aimed at making university and college admissions more flexible by removing barriers to some programmes, adjusting programme clusters and expanding career pathways for students pursuing technical subjects at the KCSE level.
KUCCPS Board Chairman Cyrus Gituai said the revised criteria were developed after consultations with universities, professional bodies and regulatory organisations to address concerns raised by stakeholders in the education sector.
Speaking during the release of placement results on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, Gituai said the criteria were being implemented for the first time in the current placement cycle.
“The Placement Board developed criteria for placement to universities through a consultative process that involved universities and professional or regulatory bodies. The new criteria have been implemented for the first time in this placement cycle,” Gituai stated.

What changed in the 2026 placement
According to KUCCPS, the revised placement framework seeks to improve access to higher education by reviewing how students are matched to university and college programmes.
The changes include removing some programme entry barriers, aligning programme clusters with stakeholder recommendations and creating additional career opportunities for learners who studied technical subjects at KCSE level.
The announcement comes as students and parents continue to seek clarity on how KUCCPS determines admission to competitive programmes such as medicine, engineering and other high-demand courses.
How KUCCPS selects students for medicine courses
KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer Agnes Wahome explained that admission into medicine programmes is not based only on a candidate’s overall KCSE mean grade.
She said applicants are ranked using cluster subjects, with performance in Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and a language subject used to calculate a cluster weight.

According to KUCCPS, universities had a combined capacity of 702 slots for medicine courses, while more than 6,500 candidates applied for the programme. The limited number of available positions meant that thousands of applicants could not secure placement in medicine.
Wahome said candidates are first ranked according to their cluster weights before being considered for placement in individual universities.
“We look at the cluster subjects, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Language. Students compete on those subjects, and they get a cluster weight, which is then ranked. We then cut it off per university,” she said, noting that each institution admits students until its declared capacity is filled.
How KUCCPS determines university cut-off points
KUCCPS explained that the final candidate admitted into a specific programme at a university determines that institution’s cut-off point for the placement cycle.
This means cut-off points vary depending on the number of applicants, available spaces and the performance of candidates competing for a particular course.
The revised KUCCPS placement criteria introduce changes to programme clusters, remove some entry barriers and expand career pathways for KCSE candidates, especially those taking technical subjects.
Medicine applicants are ranked using cluster subjects, including Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Language. Their cluster weights are compared before placement is made based on available university capacity.
A university programme’s cut-off point is determined by the performance of the last student admitted into that course at the institution during the placement cycle.
Candidates who have received their KUCCPS placement results will join their assigned universities or colleges during the September intake period.
The release of the placement results now allows 2025 KCSE candidates to confirm their assigned institutions and courses as they prepare to begin their higher education journey.
