KRA issues final warning as June 30 tax filing deadline expires at midnight
By Sharon Atieno, June 30, 2026Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has issued a final warning to millions of taxpayers across the country, urging Kenyans to file their 2025 income tax returns before the June 30 midnight deadline or risk penalties for non-compliance.
In a statement shared on its X account on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, KRA made a last-minute appeal to taxpayers, reminding them that time had run out and no deadline extension would be granted this year.
“Last call to file your tax returns, do it now or forever hold your peace,” KRA said in the statement.

The tax authority directed taxpayers to submit their returns through its digital filing platforms, including the iTax portal, KRA eCitizen portal and the Shuru WhatsApp service available on 0711 099 999.
No extension this year
The latest warning comes just days after KRA ruled out the possibility of extending the tax filing deadline, maintaining that all taxpayers must comply before midnight on June 30.
In an earlier notice, the authority insisted that unlike previous years, there would be no last-minute extension despite growing traffic on its online systems.
“Taxpayers must submit on or before 30th June 2026, in accordance with the law,” KRA said.
Officials said the authority had upgraded digital systems after experiencing technical pressure during last year’s filing period, when an extension had to be issued due to system congestion.
Penalties await late filers
KRA warned that failure to file returns before the deadline would automatically attract financial penalties and interest charges.
Under existing tax regulations, late filing attracts a penalty of Ksh2,000 or five per cent of tax due, whichever is higher, while unpaid taxes accumulate interest at one per cent monthly.
“Filing your tax return is more than a legal obligation, it is a contribution to national development. Every return filed supports transparency and helps finance essential public services,” the authority stated.
Multiple filing options available
To ease compliance, KRA has advised taxpayers to use several available filing channels, including WhatsApp through the Shuru chatbot, which allows users to file directly by entering their KRA PIN and verifying identity through a one-time password.
Taxpayers with more complex returns involving business income, rental income or multiple income streams have been advised to use the iTax portal before the midnight deadline lapses.
