Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has stalled a planned CBC orientation of teachers in Bomet County.

KNUT Bomet Branch officials led by executive secretary Malel Langat protested plans by the Ministry of Education officials to orientate teachers on weekends saying it is an infringement of their rights.

Langat said it is wrong for the local ministry of education officials to schedule orientations and training on off days for teachers.

“We oppose the orientation because Saturday and Sundays are days when teachers worship and we feel the freedom of worship as enshrined in the constitution is being infringed,” Langat said.

Speaking to the press, Langat who was in the company of KNUT Sotik branch executive secretary Mathias Langat asked the ministry of education to ensure orientations are done on weekdays.

“We support the initiative to review curriculum designs but it should be rescheduled to convenient days that do not infringe on our rights as teachers,” Langat said.

The orientation on Review of Curriculum Designs and Instructional Materials for Grades 1,2 and 3 was called off at the last minute after the protest by KNUT.

Bomet County Director of Education Appolo Apuko in a circular on Friday had directed the rolling out of the orientations in the various sub-counties beginning today.

The circular in our possession had scheduled the orientation for Konoin and Bomet Central sub-counties on the 15th and 16th while Sotik, Bomet East and Chepalungu had the orientation slated for the 22nd and 23rd of this month.

The ministry was however forced to call off the orientation at the last minute after KNUT wrote a protest letter
