KNEC launches free online training for senior school teachers
By Kenneth Mwenda, January 14, 2026The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has launched a free online training programme for senior school teachers on Competency-Based Assessment (CBA).
Teachers can now access the training directly through the KNEC portal. The initiative was announced on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, via KNEC’s official X account.
“The online training for senior school teachers on Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) is now available for free on the KNEC portal,” KNEC posted.
The programme supports the rollout of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in senior schools. The first group of Grade 10 students under the new system began senior school after the release of the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) results in December 2025.
CBA focuses on practical skills, problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity rather than rote learning. Teachers play a central role in assessing these competencies through school-based work, portfolios, and other assessment methods.

Training builds teacher competence
KNEC designed the training to equip teachers with the skills required for effective assessment under CBC. The course is self-paced and sequential, meaning teachers must complete each module before moving to the next. This structure ensures participants build their knowledge step by step.
The training covers key areas including assessment design, blueprint creation, item writing, and test development.
In addition to online access, KNEC offers optional in-person support through county Assessment Hubs and the Education Assessment Resource Centre at New Mitihani House in South C, Nairobi. These sessions allow teachers to reinforce their learning and clarify challenges.
The launch comes at a critical time. Kenya faces a shortage of senior school teachers, and only around 52,452 had received CBA training by November 2025. The free online programme addresses this gap and prepares educators for the full transition to CBC assessments in 2026 and beyond.
Senior school teachers are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to enhance their capacity. The training strengthens the education system and ensures fair and reliable assessment for learners under the new curriculum. Teachers can register today and start the course immediately.
