KNEC kicks off Grade 10 learner registration on CBA portal, sets July 30 deadline

By , June 25, 2026

The Kenya National Examinations Council has officially opened the registration of Grade 10 learners on its Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal, setting July 30, 2026, as the deadline for schools to complete the process.

In a notice issued on X account on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, to principals, KNEC said the registration follows the successful closure of registration for senior school assessment centres, with all approved institutions now enabled to upload learner details for School-Based Assessment (SBA).

The council directed principals to log into the portal using the newly generated universal centre codes obtained during the senior school registration process.

“Registration of Grade 10 learners on the CBA portal ongoing,” KNEC post.

New phase in CBC rollout

The move marks another major step in the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) as the pioneer Grade 10 class transitions into senior school assessment.

KNEC said principals are required to access the CBA portal and ensure all learners are registered within the set timelines to avoid disruptions in the assessment cycle.

“Registered centres have been enabled to register Grade 10 learners on the portal for School-Based Assessment,” KNEC said in the notice.

The council further instructed schools to use the new universal centre code as both the username and password when logging into the system.

Strict timelines remain key

The latest registration comes weeks after KNEC announced the opening of the 2026/2027 TVET examinations, where the council also introduced strict timelines and warned there would be no late registration.

At the time, KNEC emphasised the importance of institutions adhering to deadlines as part of ongoing reforms aimed at improving efficiency and accuracy in examination management.

“Registration of candidates for the November 2026 Business and Technical examinations will commence on July 6, 2026,” KNEC stated in its earlier notice.

Push for digital efficiency

The council has increasingly shifted key examination processes online as part of its broader digital transformation strategy.

Education stakeholders say the digitisation of learner registration and assessments is expected to improve data accuracy, enhance monitoring, and reduce delays in national assessments.

With the July 30 deadline now in place, principals across the country are expected to move quickly to ensure all Grade 10 learners are captured in the system ahead of the next assessment phase.
