KNEC extends deadline for uploading grade 4 and 5 SBA scores by 2 weeks

By , June 5, 2026

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has extended the deadline for the upload of Grade 4 and Grade 5 School-Based Assessment (SBA) scores on the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal by two weeks, giving schools additional time to complete the process.

In a notice issued on Friday, June 5, 2026, KNEC announced that the new deadline for uploading the SBA scores has been set for Thursday, June 18, 2026.

“The deadline for the upload of Grades 4 and 5 SBA scores onto the CBA portal has been extended for two weeks until Thursday, 18th June 2026,” KNEC stated.

The council urged heads of institutions across the country to take advantage of the extension to ensure all pending entries are completed and any existing gaps in the system are addressed before the portal is closed.

“All Heads of Institutions are encouraged to utilise this opportunity to complete all pending uploads and address any gaps before the portal is closed,” the statement read in part.

Penalties

KNEC further warned that penalties will be applied for non-compliance once the extended deadline lapses, signalling that no further extensions should be expected.

The upload of SBA scores is a key component in the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) assessment framework, which is used to track learner progress and inform placement decisions in subsequent levels of education.

Registration for 2026 KPSEA, KJSEA and KCSE examinations

The council also clarified that registration for the 2026 Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA), and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations has officially closed.

“NOTE: Registration for 2026 KPSEA, KJSEA and KCSE examination is closed,” the council stated.

The extension comes as schools continue to adjust to the demands of the competency-based education system, which places greater emphasis on continuous assessment and timely submission of learner performance data.

Education stakeholders have in the past raised concerns over delays in data uploads, system congestion, and technical challenges experienced by some institutions when accessing the CBA portal.

KNEC has been implementing gradual reforms to streamline digital assessment management and improve efficiency in data collection, processing, and analysis across the education system.

With the new deadline now set, schools are expected to expedite the submission process to avoid penalties and ensure the smooth progression of the assessment cycle.
