KMTC breaks silence on death of student ejected from matatu on Thika Road
By Sharon Atieno, June 10, 2026The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) has broken its silence following revelations from a postmortem report indicating that one of its students, Eugene Mutuku, suffered severe multiple body injuries and internal bleeding consistent with being ejected from a moving matatu along Thika Road
In a statement shared on KMTC’s X account on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, the institution said it was deeply saddened by the death of the student, noting that he had been on clinical attachment at KMTC Yatta Campus at the time of the incident.
Mutuku, who was pursuing a certificate course in Health Care Support Assistant, had joined the college in September 2025 and was undertaking his practical training when the tragedy occurred on June 5, 2026.

He was rushed to hospital after the incident but succumbed to his injuries despite efforts by medical personnel.
“According to preliminary reports, Mr. Mutuku was involved in a tragic accident on June 5, 2026 and was rushed to hospital, where, despite efforts to save his life, he sadly succumbed,” KMTC said.
Autopsy reveals fatal injuries
The statement comes after an autopsy report revealed that the student died from severe multiple body injuries and internal bleeding consistent with being ejected from a moving vehicle.
Family representatives said the postmortem conducted at the Kenyatta National Hospital Mortuary confirmed that the injuries were caused by blunt force trauma sustained during the fall.
“The probable cause of death is severe bleeding due to force from a blunt object,” a family spokesperson said, adding that the injuries were consistent with being run over after the fall.
Investigations underway
KMTC said it is working closely with relevant security agencies as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident continue.
The institution said it is committed to cooperating with authorities to establish the exact sequence of events leading to the student’s death.
Calls for justice
The student’s family has urged investigators to expedite the probe, expressing concern that those responsible have not yet been arrested.
“As a family, we are still worried that those behind this act have not been arrested,” a family representative said.
Earlier, conflicting accounts emerged over the incident, but the family dismissed claims that the student was ejected over fare issues, saying he had already paid and was awaiting change before a confrontation occurred.
KMTC has assured the family of its support during the period of grief, describing the loss as painful to the institution, the Yatta Campus community, and fellow students.
The college said it stands with the bereaved family as investigations into the fatal incident continue.
