KMPDU releases details of agreement with Meru county after calling off strike

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has announced a detailed agreement with Meru County after calling off the scheduled doctors’ strike.

In a statement by the KMPDU Secretary General on Thursday, March 5, 2026, explained a detailed agreement with the Meru County government after effectively suspending the strike notice set to expire on 6th March 2026.

“Last night we concluded and signed an agreement with the County Government of Meru, effectively suspending the strike notice set to expire on 6th March 2026. From the County Government, Negotiations were led by H.E. Rev. Isaac Mutumwa. The agreement includes the following,” Atellah said.

Promotions

According to the KMPDU boss, all common cadre promotions will be processed immediately and reflected in the March salary.

On the other hand, KMPDU noted that all consultants due for redesignation will go through suitability interviews this month, and promotions will be effected in the April payslips.

In addition, the doctors’ union has confirmed that 14 consultants in Job Group Q will be converted to Job Group R by 18th March 2026, and reflected in March payslips.

Contractual terms

The KMPDU boss has further assured Meru doctors that all suboptimal contractual terms will be harmonised as per CBA terms immediately and reflected in the March salary.

Meanwhile, eight doctors on contract who have been shortlisted for external interviews will be converted to Permanent and Pensionable (P&P) terms by 18th May 2026.

Similarly, the union has said the remaining 17 doctors will be converted to Permanent and Pensionable terms in the next financial year (2026/2027).

Study leave

The County will release four doctors for studies on a “first-come, first-served” basis once the recruitment process is complete.

According to Atellah, the two doctors currently enrolled in studies will be issued release letters immediately.

“Thank you, honourable members, for standing firmly behind the Union and its leadership in defending your rights and the dignity of our profession,” KMPDU boss added.

“Together we shall fight, and when we fight… WE WIN! Now, let’s focused to ensure thqt no county is left behind, while remaining vigilant regarding implementation of every agreement we sign,” Atellah added.
