KMPDU mourns renowned gynaecologist Dr Job Obwaka
The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has mourned the death of veteran Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Job Masakhue Lukuru Obwaka, describing him as a distinguished medical leader who dedicated his life to advancing women’s healthcare and mentoring generations of doctors.
According to a condolence statement issued on May 1, 2026, the union said Obwaka served the medical profession in Kenya for many years.
From his early training at the University of Nairobi, he contributed to women’s health and to the training and mentorship of generations of doctors.

“The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) is saddened by the passing of Dr. Job Masakhue Lukuru Obwaka, veteran Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and Chairman of the Board of Directors at The Nairobi Hospital,” the Union stated.
Obwaka professionalism
KMPDU said he was widely respected for his professionalism, clinical experience and commitment to patient care.
KMPDU added that Dr Obwaka held leadership roles in key health institutions, contributing to the growth and development of healthcare in the country, and that his dedication to the medical profession remained consistent throughout his career.

“Dr. Obwaka served the medical profession in Kenya with distinction for many years,” the statement read in part. “He contributed significantly to women’s health and to the training and mentorship of generations of doctors.”
“We extend our sincere condolences to his family, his colleagues at The Nairobi Hospital, and the wider medical fraternity. We stand with them in this moment of loss. May his soul rest in peace.”
Obwaka’s death
The news was confirmed by Kenya Medical Association Chairman Dr Simon Kigondu, who described Obwaka’s passing as a major loss to the medical community. He died while being rushed to the hospital.

“Just 45 days after we rescued Job from trumped-up charges by the State in the Nairobi Hospital issue, he has left us. This is a very sad day for the gynaecology fraternity,” Kigondu said in a statement shared on Facebook.
Dr Obwaka had recently been at the centre of a public storm involving governance disputes at Nairobi Hospital, which culminated in his arrest alongside other officials.
