Police in Kisumu yesterday morning arrested a lorry driver suspected of ferrying narcotics and seized bhang worth Sh18 million.

The operation comes hot on the heels of accusations that the Kisumu County security team was not doing enough to curb insecurity and drug trafficking.

Kisumu West Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), Nalyanya Wanyonyi told KNA that the 4.30am arrest occurred when police officers from Maseno Police Station en-route to Ogal beach were tipped off by members of the public.

The DCC said the officers who were accompanied by their Sub-County Police Commander David Nyabuto moved swiftly and came across a white Mercedes Axor lorry Reg KDA 321R and Trailer Reg ZF 6300 parked by the roadside at Ongalo area.

They stopped to check it and asked the driver to open the trailer, wherein they found 16 bags and one suitcase containing the bhang weighing 1,490 Kg with a street value of Sh18 million.

The administrator said that the drugs were destined for Mombasa. The driver and his lorry, he said, were being detained at Maseno Police Station.

He added that the driver, Allan Otela Ndanyi, will be arraigned today.
