Kisumu: 21-year-old found hiding in water tank with loaded gun after robbing a guard
By Kiprono Keileb, October 28, 2025A 21-year-old man, who is a person of interest in a robbery with violence, was dramatically arrested in Kisumu after he was found hiding inside a water storage tank on a rooftop, armed with an AK-47 rifle.
According to a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) posted on X on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, the 21-year-old was apprehended after Kisumu Sub-County Law Enforcement Officers on patrol responded to gunshots in the area.
“A 21-year-old robbery with violence suspect who robbed a security guard at gunpoint in Kisumu has been arrested,” the DCI said in a post shared on their official X account.
The DCI noted that the officers acted swiftly upon hearing the gunfire, rushing to the scene where they discovered that the suspect had attacked a security guard.
“Upon arrival, officers established that the suspect had attacked a security guard, robbed him of his mobile phone and rubber shoes, before fleeing the scene,” the statement read.

The incident triggered an immediate manhunt as officers combed through the area in pursuit of the 21-year-old. The chase ended dramatically when he was found hiding in an unusual spot.
“Determined not to let him escape, the officers launched a hot pursuit that paid off when the suspect was discovered hiding inside a water storage drum on the rooftop of Patel Sarmaji Building,” the DCI added.
Inside the water tank, the officers found an AK-47 rifle loaded with a magazine containing five rounds of ammunition, believed to have been used during the robbery.
“He was arrested on the spot, and an AK-47 rifle loaded with a magazine containing five rounds of ammunition was recovered from his possession,” the statement said.
He was then escorted to Kisumu Central Police Station, where he is being processed pending arraignment in court.

The arrest has drawn attention from Kisumu residents, who praised the officers for their swift response and bravery in handling the situation.
