Kindiki leads distribution of goodies as Christmas comes big for citizens

The annual observance of Christmas Day among the professing Christians came with a memorable feeling for a section of the Kenyan populace.

Amid a biting economy and rising cost of living, a cross section of Kenyans had their most immediate need for some form of indulgence answered, at least for the day.

The political class, comprising top government officials, members of Parliament (MPs), and public servants, set forth with commendable acts of generosity and selfless deeds with gifts to the local residents.

Altruistic acts

Across the country, activities on social media showed a horde of people thronging designated venues where several politicians and government leaders mingled with citizens for the celebrations.

Additionally, in a show of altruism, whether impelled by religious belief or just mere sharing as a means of caring, others distributed household necessities such as foodstuffs, bedding, and equipment such as wheelchairs to the less fortunate and the deprived.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki set the tone with his trip to Irunduni in Tharaka Nithi County hours before Christmas Eve, where he engaged the residents.

Others spared a moment for those incarcerated in different correctional facilities across the nation, such as Saboti MP Caleb Amisi and Turkana Governor Joseph Lormurkal, who chose to observe the date with inmates.

In a moving plea to the government, the legislator highlighted the need to secure employment opportunities for the inmates immediately upon their release.

“Whether it is carpentry, masonry, brickmaking, or whatever it is, it must be the responsibility of the government to take them out of prison and place them in jobs. Because we are not training them so they can go out and tarmac,” Amisi stated.

Top Kenyan sports personalities and celebrities were also not left behind by the trend. The grouping saw to it that the day went down with a spark of its own with the long-held tradition of grassroots games.

Just as it has been done before, the hosting of end-of-year local football tournaments across the country saw communities engaged as footballers and sportsmen brought their best to impact their immediate environment through small but impactful acts of social responsibility.

From Western to Nyanza, the mini-tournaments that are set to extend to the new year, however small in scale, kept the locals engaged and the joy shared.

Among the annual events, the Cleophas Malala and the Super Karamoja tournaments, hosted in Kakamega County, attract teams across the entire five counties in the western region.
