Kindiki declares war on illicit brews, drugs

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has ordered a crackdown on illicit alcohol and drugs in Kiambu County.

The CS also directed security officers in the county to arrest all illegal immigrants who have been camping at various centres, especially in Ruaka area, and take them to court.

Speaking while inaugurating a new assistant county commissioner’s office at Cianda Ward in Kiambaa, Kindiki (pictured left) said illicit brews were threatening to wipe out generations, particularly in Central Kenya and other regions.

“We will not relent in the war on illicit liquor and drugs and I am fully committed to ending the menace that has left most families in the Central Kenya region in pain,” said Kindiki who was accompanied by Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi and area MP Njuguna Kawanjiku.

Kindiki said he had listed terrorism, illegal drinks and drugs as well as the insecurity situation in northern part of the country occasioned by cattle rustling as a serious threat to Kenya’s stability.

He ordered administration and security agencies to initiate operations meant to contain the menace and restore the future of the youth who are the most vulnerable.

Killer buildings

Kindiki pledged to work closely with the county government in the war against the manufacture and sale of illicit alcohol.

He announced that the national government had released Sh1 billion for the construction of 20 modern markets in Kiambu County.

Wamatangi vowed to close all premises where the unlicensed alcohol is sold.

The Governor requested Kindiki’s co-operation in a crackdown on rogue developers who are flouting construction rules and putting up unapproved buildings.

“We need the goodwill and support of your ministry in enforcement of our laws to check the wanton flouting of construction rules,” said the Governor.
