Kikuyu Member of Parliament (MP) Kimani Ichung’wa has welcomed his transfer to the National Assembly’s ‘Catering Committee’ by the Jubilee Party saying he is experienced enough for the task.

The MP was speaking on a TV show Sunday night alongside his Kieni counterpart Kanini Kega. He expressed excitement over the new changes in the House committees.

“I will serve with diligence as I have always done. I am not new to catering, I once operated a restaurant in Kikuyu,” he said.

The Kikuyu MP is among the team that was ‘dethroned’ from the key leadership positions in the National Assembly committees in the recent Jubilee party ‘cleansing’.

House leadership changes

The Jubilee Party moved Ichung’wa from the Budget and Appropriations Committee to the Member’s Service Committee.

Until 2010, the Member’s Service Committee was referred to as the Catering Committee.

An independent parliamentary performance tracker (Parliamentary Scorecard) recently ranked Ichung’wa as the top performing committee chairperson.

Speaking of his former post, MP Ichungw’a boasted of his vast accounting skills, coming from a professional accounting background.

At the House Committee, Jubilee Party replaced Ichung’wa with Kanini. Ichung’wa said his committee will make sure Kanini Kega shall always have ‘tea and affordable meals’ during parliamentary sessions.

MP Kanini refuted claims that the Jubilee House changes were to punish defiant MPs. He said the changes were necessary as their three-year tenure was ending in August.

“The House changes were necessary just as a change is. For those MPs who think they have been demoted, you can make lemonade out of a lemon,” he remarked.

Ichungw’a said his three-year experience at the committee would be enough ‘coursework’ for Kanini.

MP Ichung’wa remarked the crucial which Kanini has assumed the leadership of the committee with the Covid-19 crisis.

“Kanini has assumed the Committee at a very crucial time with limited resources but more need,” he remarked.
