Police Corporal Caroline Kangogo, accused of shooting dead a male colleague in Nakuru and another man in Juja, Kiambu county is not new to drama.

Kangogo, 34, hit the headlines on Monday morning when her suspected lover, Constable John Ogweno, who was attached to the Nakuru Central Police Station, was found slumped dead inside his car at Kasarani police line in Nakuru with a gunshot wound on his head.

Kangogo  disappeared and only resurfaced in Juja, Kiambu on the same day, in the company of a male companion.

A police signal stated that Kangogo had spent the night with the male companion, identified as Peter Ndwiga, whose body was found at a hotel room in Kiambu.

The two had booked room number 107 at the Hotel Dedamax at 4pm on Monday where they spent the night.

At around 1pm Tuesday, the owner of the hotel, Peter Mugeshi informed the police that one of his clients had been found dead inside a room.

Spent cartridge

CCTV footage captured Kangogo, dressed in a yellow hoodie, leaving the hotel at around 12.30am on Tuesday.

Another screen grab of the footage obtained from cameras at the VIP lounge shows her walking into the hotel with the deceased.

 Detectives, led by Juja Sub-County Police Commander visited the scene where it was established that the two booked the room on July 5.

At the scene, police recovered a spent cartridge and a car key for a Toyota Probox. 

DCI detectives claim Kangogo lured the man to the room after paying for it, before shooting him on the head at point-blank.

“She later told an attendant working at the guest house that she had gone to buy toothpaste, before making her escape,” a statement by DCI states.

The body of the man, which was discovered on the bed in the hotel room, had one shoe on. The man was fully clothed.

An exhibit obtained by detectives is a blood-stained receipt indicating they paid Sh3,020 on Monday, just hours after the body of Ogweno was found in his car.

A police signal released yesterday indicated that Kangogo was last seen boarding a motorbike and heading towards Nairobi using Thika Road early yesterday morning.

“On 7/7/2021 at around 0215hrs information was received at the DCI hotline from Kahawa Wendani of a caller who reported that Kangogo, an officer trending over the shooting of Ogweno and another unknown person in Juja had been spotted around Kahawa Wendani area, Celvet Club, after which she hopped onto a motorbike and headed towards Nairobi via Thika road and exited at Drive-Inn,” reads the signal.

Chilling message

Well-placed sources within the investigating team revealed that the married mother of two had sent a chilling message to her estranged husband, a senior officer attached to the Maritime Police Unit in Mombasa, that she would also go after him.

Interviews with colleagues and acquaintances paint a portrait of a police officer, was hooked on alcohol.

A survey by a State organ, released on Tuesday, indicated more than 30 per cent of Kenya’s police officers are  suffering from drugs and alcoholism abuse.

Kangogo’s love for alcohol, according to colleagues, is legendary and revellers in most clubs around Nakuru knew her.

“I think anyone who has gone to popular joints within Nakuru CBD has come across her. She is social though quick to anger,” said a colleague.

Her striking beauty also played a big part in her wayward nature, with many men falling for her without knowing she was a cop.  She spends most of her off days, partying hours on end.

“A majority of her acquaintances  are not aware that she has a family. I once arrested a man who was shocked to see her in full police uniform at the station,” a colleague recounted.

Not even the 7pm curfew on entertainment joints would come in the way of Kangogo and her booze, as she would mobilise her fellow revelers and relocate to the parking spots within Kasarani police staff quarters where they would continue partying for hours on end.

In one instance, she is said to have “rescued” several revellers who had been arrested for flouting Covid-19 regulations by partying at a popular club during curfew hours. 

She was previously attached to the Judiciary department before she was moved to the Anti-Crime unit at the Nakuru Central Police Station.

Court officials, who interacted with her also brought out another side of her, describing her as a smart and hard working .

“In handling criminals, we trusted her and she was always on the lookout after an incident in 2017 in which a magistrate was attacked,” he said.

Records from the police indicate she was born on January 10, 1987 at Nyawa village, Tambach division in Keiyo.

False alarm

She was enlisted in the police force on August 14, 2008 at the rank of corporal and earned her first promotion on January 20, 2015.

Police records also indicate Kangogo was a sharpshooter, who attained a first class in shooting range classification at the Kiganjo Police Training College.

Surprisingly, nobody reported hearing gunshots in both  incidents linked to Kangogo, begging the question as to whether the gun used had been fitted with a silencer.

Ogweno’s firearm is yet to be recovered but police said they found some of his clothes in Kangogo’s house.

Police have, however, recovered one of her phones, which was dumped in Nakuru.

“She is feared by many officers, as she is known to cause problems for her lovers. One day after she disagreed with one of her lovers she raised a false alarm and the man was beaten up by a mob.

He was arrested and thrown in police cells before it was discovered that he was also an officer who had been framed,” said the officer.

Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti appealed to the public to help them get the woman, who he termed as rogue, armed and dangerous.

“We are cautioning members of the public, especially men, to be on the lookout for the rogue officer, who is luring men to her trap before executing them in cold blood,” he said.
