Elders from the Kikuyu community have just concluded the cleansing ceremony for the Mukuruwe wa Nyagathanga shrine and are now leading prayers at Mumbi grounds.

The elders spent three hours at the shrine where they held prayers and performed a sacrifice to sanctify it and only cultural priests were allowed in.

The ceremony was conducted jointly by the two factions of Kikuyu council of elders and Kiama Kia Ma in a show of unity.

Dominic Boro Njenga, the lead cultural priest, however, said the ceremony was not done targeting an individual but was to cleanse the shrine from any unholy thing which could have been implanted there.

He said during the coronation of National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, there were cultural protocols which were overlooked and people who were not supposed to access the shrine but they did.

“We wanted to make the shrine clean free from any spiritual and cultural contamination,” said Boro.

He also said they also sanctified a fig tree which shall be used by the elders when performing sacrifices.

“Fig tree has a lot of significance in our community and it was being used to offer sacrifices,” he said.

Boro also said the ceremony was meant to bring together the warring factions of elders and make them speak in one voice.

“We want to forge unity of purpose for out community and as elders we haveto set the pace,” he said.
