‘We don’t need you anymore’ – Kigame tells parliament over alleged takeover by executive
By Joel Sang, July 7, 2023Former presidential aspirant Reuben Kigame has called out Parliament for allegedly neglecting the public and serving the interests of the president instead.
The Parliament, especially the National Assembly, has been on the spot recently for passing the controversial Finance Bill 2023 – which has already been assented to by President William Ruto – despite opposition from various quarters.
The bill is now the subject of court proceedings as its legality has been challenged after applications against it were filed by Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah.
Kigame’s take
Now Kigame has expressed his dissatisfaction with parliament and voiced his support for the Saba Saba protest by the Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya coalition.
“Happy Saba Saba Day to the great people of Kenya. Today marks the first day of taking our country back from our oppressors.
“We advise the president to put citizens first and ensure they have food, healthcare, jobs, and education before projects such as housing. We put Parliament on notice. For serving the interests of the executive instead of citizens, we don’t need you anymore. You may as well pack now,” Kigame said in a statement.

The evangelist also called for the respect of the constitution but called out the Kenya Kwanza government, claiming it has oppressed the people.
“We have given our advice before today. We have peacefully requested the prioritization of Mwananchi. 93% of us are against tax hikes, debt, the finance bill, corruption, a bloated government, false promises to citizens, a parliament that does not work for the people, etc.
“As citizens of Kenya, we must all abide by the constitution we promulgated in 2010. Everyone must obey the law, and the three arms of government must stay independent. Most importantly, there is no need for government whatsoever if it oppresses the people it claims to represent,” he added.
Apart from Kigame, several leaders have made their stance known on the Saba Saba rally led by Azimio chief Raila Odinga.
Ledama Ole Kina stance
Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina said the protests are not about the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement but about the common citizens.
“Saba Saba is not about Raila Odinga; it’s never been about him! The question is, are you pissed off enough to cause the price of Unga to come down?
“Are you mad enough about the cost of living? If the answer is yes, then get your black a ** on the street and demand change! Raila, stay at home. Let’s see if these guys you have been fighting for give a hoot in hell about their own welfare,” Ole Kina said.
Cherargei’s take
On the other hand, Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei called for the cancellation of the opposition rallies for what he alleges is ‘economic sabotage’.
“The acts of lawlessness reported along Thika Road are equivalent to economic sabotage.
“The acts of hooliganism, violence, and intimidation are signatures of the Azimio-OKA/Tinga and Uhuru demos. If need be, the police should cancel the Maandamanos and deal ruthlessly with lawbreakers, including arresting organizers,” Cherargei said.

The protests have rocked the country while the president is on an international tour to the Comoros.
