Kibwana says floods crisis requires united action not political blame games

By , March 8, 2026

Former Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana has called for a united response to the ongoing flood crisis, urging leaders to avoid political blame and instead work together to address the disaster.

Heavy rains over the weekend of March 6–7, 2026, triggered flash floods in Nairobi and several other counties, causing deaths, displacement and widespread damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure.

Rescue teams have continued search and recovery efforts in affected areas as authorities respond to the unfolding situation.

Calls for bipartisan approach

In a message shared on March 8, Kibwana urged both government and opposition leaders to adopt a bipartisan approach in addressing the emergency and developing long-term solutions.

“The floods emergency should be one issue in which government & opposition adopt a bipartisan or united approach to solve the immediate problems and find a lasting solution. Blame games will not solve a problem caused by several generations of politicians. Pole to all affected.”

His remarks come as the country grapples with the impact of heavy rainfall that has affected several counties, with floodwaters sweeping through roads, homes and businesses.

Emergency response and rescue efforts

Leaders have continued to issue statements as rescue operations intensify in the affected regions.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also expressed concern over the impact of the floods, urging authorities to respond quickly to support affected families.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen earlier said the government had activated multi-agency teams to assist in search and rescue operations.

He also called on the public to remain vigilant and follow advisories issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department as heavy rains continue in several parts of the country.

Long-term solutions urged

The floods have once again drawn attention to recurring challenges linked to drainage systems, settlement in riparian areas and the need for improved infrastructure in flood-prone regions.

Experts and leaders have previously called for long-term planning and investment in drainage systems, environmental management and climate-resilient urban development.

Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious and follow official safety guidelines as rains continue in several parts of the country.
