Khalwale slams Mudavadi after his recent remarks on St Mary’s Hospital
By Mabonga Makhanu, August 31, 2025Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has slammed Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi over his recent remarks on the now-closed St Mary’s Mumias Hospital, where Mudavadi claimed that the Social Health Authority (SHA) had remitted Ksh88 million to the facility.
While speaking during a church service in Mukhea on Sunday, August 31, 2025, Khalwale dismissed Mudavadi’s remarks, telling him to stick to Vihiga matters since, according to him, Kakamega issues should be left to Kakamega leaders. He added that Mudavadi does not even know many places in Kakamega, including the St Mary’s Hospital he was purporting to speak for.
“Musalia Mudavadi, please stick to Vihiga issues. You do not understand Kakamega, and therefore, you should stop misleading the public on matters concerning St Mary’s Mission Hospital.” Khalwale said.
Khalwale further stated that the SHA had crippled St Mary’s Mumias by failing to remit the money owed to the hospital. He noted that the hospital was owed over Ksh100 million, yet SHA had only remitted Ksh9 million, leaving the facility financially paralysed and eventually forcing it to shut down.
Khalwale continued telling Mudavadi that it’s his role as the topmost leader from the region to ensure that the money owed to the hospital by the medical insurance scheme is paid to the facility instead of issuing remarks that are unfounded.
“Wewe kama prime CS, kutoka kwa jamii yetu mwenye ulipewa kiti kwa sababu yetu, ilikuwa jukumu lako kuhakikisha kwamba hio Ksh117 million imelipwa.” Khalwale lamented
Closure of St Mary’s Hospital
This comes after the facility was recently shut down due to crippling debts exceeding Ksh 180 million, leaving over 200 staff jobless and hundreds of patients without care.
Mudavadi, addressing the issue during a burial in Malava on August 28, 2025, insisted that the hospital had received Ksh82 million out of Ksh117 million in claims from the Social Health Authority (SHA) and accused the management of internal mismanagement rather than government delays.

However, Kakamega Bishop Joseph Obanyi vehemently disputed this, revealing that only Ksh9 million was disbursed for the renal unit, and dismissed Mudavadi’s claims as misleading propaganda.
