A section of Kericho Members of County Assembly (MCAs) has accused the Senate of receiving bribes to rescue embattled Governor Erick Mutai from impeachment last week.

While addressing a press conference on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, Kapsoit MCA Paul Chirchir Tarimbo singled out the Senate, alleging that the Bomet Governor was the mastermind behind ensuring that the Kericho Governor was saved from impeachment, despite having a clear conflict of interest.

The MCA went on to echo President Ruto’s recent remarks, labelling the Senate as “soko huru” and an epicentre of corruption, claiming that the president’s words were true since he personally witnessed money exchanging hands.

He also criticised the basis on which the impeachment motion was dismissed. According to him, despite the Communication Authority of Kenya establishing that there was no fault in the voting system, as the governor’s team had claimed, it still proceeded to rule that there was a problem with the system and declared that the two-thirds

“We were in the Senate; we saw with our eyes. The president, the other day, said the Senate is Soko huru. I can authoritatively confirm to the nation, indeed, ‘senate ni soko huru’; you saw for yourself.

“They took three days talking on a technicality, even after the Senate speaker ordered the ICT authority to evaluate if there was a fault in the voting system, and they established that there was no fault. The senators continued to debate on the same and voted against the ruling of the ICT authority,” Tarimbo stated.

Despite this, the governor officially resumed his duties three days after surviving impeachment at the Senate.

In a statement shared on his social media, the governor said that he had resumed office with renewed focus on serving the people of Kericho. Before resuming work, he joined in a prayer led by Reverend Joseph Melilei of Worldwide Gospel Church, Chepseon, asking for God’s guidance in his leadership.

He expressed gratitude for the prayers and support he has received, urging residents to continue standing with him as he leads the county.

“This morning, I officially resumed my duties with renewed focus on serving the great people of Kericho. Before resuming work, we sought God’s guidance in prayer, led by Reverend Joseph Melilei of Worldwide Gospel Church, Chepseon,” he said.

“May the Lord light our path as we continue the journey of service delivery to our people. I remain grateful for your prayers and humbly request your continued support in lifting our county before God,” Mutai said.
