Kericho county official in custody over extortion
Suspect allegedly demands Sh200,000 to facilitate a property transaction, now detained at police station
A Kericho county government official was at the weekend arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over alleged extortion.
Ismail Kipng’eno Koskei was apprehended by EACC detectives after demanding Sh200,000 from a member of the public to facilitate a land transaction.
The complainant had gone to the office to release a new title for his plot of land which had been registered in their late mother’s name and had been incorrectly combined with Brooke Market County Council of Kipsigis.
New title deed
The Land Survey office separated the plot from Brooke Market, but the suspect insisted on a Sh200,000 bribe to release the
new title. The complainant, a resident of Anaibkoi Sub-County, refused to succumb to the bribe demands and instead sought help from EACC.
Koskei was arrested in his office in Kericho after he received Sh100,000 as the initial deposit for the demanded Sh200,000 bribe. He was later taken to EACC South Rift Regional Offices in Nakuru, where he recorded a statement and is currently detained at Nakuru Central Police Station.

over conflict of interest and procurement fraud.
Janet Mwendwa, an official at KPA, is to face charges over a fraudulent tender worth Sh6.4 million awarded to a company owned by her daughter.
The official is suspected to have traded with KPA through her daughter’s company, and participated in the tender evaluation process leading to the award.
Fraudulent practice
Janet was arrested after the DPP concurred with the Commission’s recommendations that she be charged with conflict of interest, unlawful acquisition of public property, fraudulent practice in procurement and uttering false documents, contrary to the law.
She was later escorted to the Mombasa Anti-Corruption Court to take plea.
These incidents reflect numerous similar cases across the country where public servants demand bribes before providing services and undertake fraudulent activities. The Commission is intensifying enforcement action against corrupt public servants and encourages service seekers to always report such instances.
