Kenya’s envoy in Maputo warns citizens against overstaying in Mozambique
By Faith Lagat, October 6, 2025The Kenya High Commission in Maputo has issued a public advisory urging Kenyan nationals to comply with Mozambican immigration regulations, particularly regarding the permitted duration of stay.
The notice, released on October 1, 2025, applies to all Kenyans travelling to Mozambique, including those applying for Portuguese visas.
“The High Commission therefore urges all Kenyans travelling to Mozambique to strictly comply with the permitted duration of stay to avoid inconveniences, fines, or other sanctions.”
The High Commission noted an increase in cases of overstaying, which violates the bilateral Agreement on Exemption from Visa Requirements for Holders of Ordinary Passports between Kenya and Mozambique, effective since 2018.
“The Kenya High Commission in Maputo has observed an increase in cases of Kenyan nationals overstaying in Mozambique, contrary to the Agreement on Exemption from Visa Requirements for Holders of Ordinary Passports between the Republic of Kenya and the Republic of Mozambique, which has been in force since 2018,” read the public notice on X dated October 6, 2025.
Citizens are reminded that overstaying could lead to enforcement measures by Mozambican authorities, highlighting the need for careful planning and monitoring of travel durations.

Visa-free entry rules and authorised stays
Under the agreement, Kenyan citizens holding valid ordinary passports or equivalent travel documents with a minimum validity of six months are allowed to enter Mozambique without a visa for stays not exceeding ninety days.
The purpose of the visit must align with the activities permitted under a visitor’s permit, such as tourism or short-term business engagements. Exceeding this 90-day period constitutes a breach of Mozambican immigration laws, exposing travellers to potential fines and legal action.
“Kenyan nationals holding valid ordinary passports or equivalent travel documents with a minimum validity of six (6) months are permitted to enter Mozambique without a visa for visits not exceeding ninety (90) days, provided the purpose of stay aligns with that for which a visitor’s permit may be issued.”
The High Commission stressed the importance of adhering strictly to these rules to avoid complications that could disrupt travel plans or result in penalties.
“Please note that exceeding the authorised 90-day period amounts to a violation of Mozambican immigration laws and attracts penalties, including possible legal repercussions.”
