Kenyans mourn Gachagua satirist KK Mwenyewe, 25

By , July 16, 2025

Nicholas Lea once said, “Everything has an end.”

This saying has become particularly poignant when people reflect on the cyclical nature of existence, and it came to life on Monday, July 14, 2025, when sensational Kenyan comedian, content creator, and satirist KK Mwenyewe breathed his last.

Born Zachariah Kariuki, the 25-year-old funnyman died while receiving treatment at Kiambu Level 4 Hospital following a brief illness, according to fellow comedian and frequent collaborator Kafengo.

Uncanny impersonations

An applied computer science student at Kisii University, KK was best known for his uncanny impersonations of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The comedian had previously shared that his friends initially pushed him into impersonating Gachagua, though he wasn’t sure he could pull it off.

“It came super easy for me,” he said in a past interview with a local publication.

“My friends advised me to take up the Gachagua challenge, and I pulled it off. I then decided to keep it up since everyone seems to be enjoying them so much.”

Hailing from Limuru, Kiambu County, KK rose to fame soon after the Kenya Kwanza regime assumed power in 2022.

His comical takes on political satire, mimicking Gachagua’s distinctive speaking style and mannerisms with flawless accuracy, endeared him to a multitude of followers on social media.

By the time of his death, KK had amassed more than 1.1 million followers on TikTok, 415,000 on Facebook, and 58,200 on Instagram.

His final post, about how failed drug tests are denying many people job opportunities, was published on July 4, 2025.

In recent times, KK had progressed beyond his witty, initial Gachagua-styled comedy, creating broader and more diverse content.

He frequently collaborated with other creators such as Kafengo, Cashina Ke, and Kufai, expanding his comedic range and appeal.

Tributes pour in

Following news of his demise, Kenyans from all walks of life took to social media to express their grief and eulogise the fallen comedian.

Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah described KK as a courageous and talented artist whose work resonated with a generation.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Zakaria Kariuki, popularly known as Mr. KK Mwenyewe, a young and talented comedian whose voice resonated with the spirit of a generation,” Omtatah said in a statement.

“Through satire and art, Mr. KK courageously held a mirror to society, using humour not to divide, but to awaken, educate, and unite.”

His fellow collaborator Kafengo wrote: “Rest in peace, brother, you will forever be in our hearts. To the family and friends, may God give us strength during these hard times.”

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro posted on Facebook: “This is tragic and sudden. Zachariah Kariuki (Mr KK Mwenyewe) was a very talented and creative comedian. We send our most heartfelt condolences to his family following his passing. It is still unbelievable. Poleni sana. May KK Rest In Peace.”

Social media user Njee Muthambi Nancie wrote: “The unpredictability of life… Shine on your way, our own Riggy G.”

Mumias East MP Peter Salasya also joined in mourning the young talent, writing on X: “From Allah we come, and to Him we return.

Deeply saddened by the passing of Zakaria Kariuki, our vibrant Mr KK Mwenyewe, whose authentic content brought joy to many.

“As a youth leader, my heart aches for this loss. To the Kenya Content Creators Association, you’ve lost a true asset. RIP, champ.”
