Various parts of the country are expected to receive moderate to high rainfall in the next five days starting from Saturday, November 9, 2024.

This marks the continuation of the short-rains season which commenced last week in some parts of the country including Nairobi.

According to a weather advisory issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met), the showers will be scattered, pounding in the morning, afternoon or evening.

“Rainfall is expected in some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, the Coast and North-eastern Kenya,” the weatherman said in the general outlook.

Western part

According to the forecast, the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley which features Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot Counties will experience rainfall for all the five days.

Showers are mostly expected in the afternoon and evening. Some areas will however remain partly cloudy due to the rainfall effects.

Nairobi and neighbouring counties

Most Nairobi residents were caught off-guard by the rains which started last week. Before that, residents experienced very high temperatures due to the sun’s intensity.

Nonetheless, in the latest forecast, the weatherman has advised the residents to prepare for showers.

Nairobi will share similar weather patterns as Highlands East of the Rift Valley including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharaka Nithi.

Coastal counties

Coast (Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale Counties as well as coastal parts of Tana River County) will experience showers over a few places.

Despite the projected rainfall, the areas are expected to experience high daytime temperatures which will hit 34 degrees celsius.

South-eastern lowlands (Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta Counties as well as inland parts of Tana River County) will also experience rainfall.

With the rains predicted, motorists are expected to drive carefully due to slippery roads and reduced visibility.

It is also an opportunity for farmers to plant various crops including vegetables ahead of another long-rains season expected next year.

The rainwater is also set to be collected in various dams to help in electricity generation.
