Kenyan filmmaker Wanuri Kahiu lands a huge role in Hollywood

Award-winning Kenyan filmmaker Wanuri Kahiu is making big strides in Hollywood.
The 39-year-old film director, known for her movies such as the controversial Rafiki, From A Whisper, Pumzi, Homecoming and Who Am I, has been chosen to direct The Black Kids, a film adapted from Christina Hammonds Reed’s upcoming debut novel YA.
She will get the opportunity to work with among others Allison Davis, a world-renowned producer and writer who will be adapting the film.
The film tells a story of a wealthy African-American teenager whose family gets caught smack in the Los Angeles chaos of 1992.
Wanuri, became the first Kenyan filmmaker to premiere a film at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018 with Rafiki.
She is also set to direct HBO’s pilot Shade, which is being produced by Oprah Winfrey.
