Harambee Stars kicked off their CHAN 2024 campaign in style with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over DR Congo at a packed Kasarani Stadium on Sunday evening, August 3, 2025.

The match-winner came in the first half from Austin Odhiambo, the creative playmaker from Gor Mahia, who fired home after a slick move in the additional half-time minutes.

Austin danced through DR Congo’s defence before slotting home a nicely worked shot at the bottom corner.

The crowd erupted as Kenya took the lead against one of Africa’s most experienced sides, two-time CHAN champions DR Congo.

The Group A clash, played in front of a lively crowd, saw Kenya claim all three points thanks to Odhiambo’s composed finish in the 45+2 minute. He latched onto a clever pass from David Sakwa and calmly guided a left-footed shot beyond DR Congo goalkeeper Brudel Efonge.

Kenya hold firm lead

Although DR Congo controlled early possession, Kenya grew in confidence as the match progressed. Their discipline and organisation frustrated the Congolese side, who were desperate to avoid another goalless outing following their disappointing 2022 campaign.

In the second half, the visitors applied more pressure. Jonathan Mokonzi and Kitambala both threatened with headers, while Heltone Kayembe forced a fine save from Byrne Omondi in the 59th minute. Kenya’s defence, led by Sylvester Owino and Alphonce Omija, stood firm to repel a series of late corners.

Benni McCarthy, in charge of the Harambee Stars for his first major tournament, made several substitutions to preserve the lead. The introduction of Mike Kibwage and Marvin Nabwire in the final quarter helped solidify the midfield and see out the win.

Kenya’s victory marked a significant milestone in their CHAN journey, as the team made its debut in the continental tournament reserved for home-based players.

Next, Kenya will face Angola on Thursday in what promises to be another tough fixture. DR Congo, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back when they meet Morocco.
