Kenya Red Cross confirms response as building under construction collapses in South C
By Joel Masibo, January 2, 2026The Kenya Red Cross has confirmed the collapse of a 16-storey building under construction in Nairobi’s South C area.
In a statement shared via X on Friday, January 2, 2026, the Kenya Red Cross noted that a multi-agency team had been dispatched for an operation with injuries and fatalities yet to be confirmed.
”Early this morning, a building under construction collapsed in the Shopping Centre area of South C, Nairobi County. A multi-agency response team is on site managing the situation,” the statement read in part. This happens amid the ongoing heavy rainfall pounding most parts of the country, posing flood risks and related disasters.
In their weekly weather forecast report released on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, the Kenya Meteorological Department predicted that at the beginning of the week, rainfall is expected to persist in several parts of the country, particularly in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley itself, the Lake Victoria Basin, parts of North-western and North-eastern Kenya, the Coastal region, and the South-eastern lowlands.

According to the latest national weather outlook, most parts of the country will experience nights in the week spanning Tuesday, December 30, 2025, to Monday, January 5, 2026. The department said that residents in these areas should be prepared for isolated thunderstorms and occasional heavy rainfall, which may disrupt travel, outdoor activities, and holiday plans.

However, as the week progresses, weather conditions are forecast to gradually shift to predominantly sunny and dry conditions across much of the country. This transition is expected to bring some relief, especially in regions that have experienced sustained rainfall in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, the latest development in South C adds to many cases of a similar kind where injuries and fatalities have been reported in recent days in Nairobi and its environs, raising questions about the safety of both commercial and residential buildings in the country’s capital.
